2002-03 Results - October Saturday
26th October
Accies 1sts 3 (Gareth
Jones 2, Chris Dobson) Old
Wilsonians 0 (Mark Dawson). Old Salvatorians 2 Accies 2nds
0. Old Bealonians 1 Accies 3rds
3 (Ben Goodier 2, Gio Martelli). Hale End Athletic 2 Accies
4ths 2 (Matt Wanford, Jon Logie, Accies won 7-6 on penalties). Old Woodhouseians 2 Accies
5ths 4 (Julian Courtney-Stubbs 2, Mike Epstein, Dino Antoniades). Egbertians 1 Accies 6ths
3 (Nick Reed 2, Spencer Gore). A
good day for the Accies. The firsts returned to winning ways with a convincing
3-0 victory over Old Wilsonians at Shenley, a key result with the same
opposition due next weekend. For the 2nd XI
the first bump of the season, with a
2-0 loss to Old Salvatorians. Much of the tale was the same as previous weeks,
failure to take early chances, but this time the late breakthrough did not come,
and Salvos took advantage to take the points. How
do you maintain the same level of performance against a team you comfortably
beat the previous week? Answers on a postcard to the 3rds, who struggled in
beating Old Bealonians 3-1 in the LOB Cup. For the 4ths, a wild one - 2-2 after
extra time in the LOB Cup against Hale End, and a tight 7-6 win on penalties.
Poor Hale End!!! LOB
Cup for the 5ths as well, and despite some panics on getting a side out, a 4-2
win over Old Woodhouseians. Finally, AFA Cup day for the 6th XI, and finally a
win. Against a useful Egbertians side a game we could easily have lost, but with
the Turtle returning and in "mature and vocal form" (as described
during the week, quite the nicest way of saying "old and big mouthed"
I've ever come across) and Nick Reed nicking two and Spenny Gore continuing his
run the Accies eventually ran out 3-1 winners. Saturday

Accies 1sts 0 Old
Foresters 2. Old Meadonians 0 (Ciaran
Hickey) Accies 2nds 4 ( Ian Roberts 3, Nat Keast). Accies 3rds 5 (Ben Goodier
2, Gio Martelli 2) Old Bealonians 0 (Danny McConnell). Accies
5ths 1 (Julian Courtney-Stubbs) Old Camdenians 3. Southgate County 1 Accies 6ths
3 (Spencer Gore 2, Chris Whyman). Accies Veterans
2 (Andy Edwards 2) Hale End Athletic 0 (Ian Christopherson). The
1sts never lose at Shenley. All the Accies know that. Alas, no-one told Old
Foresters, who turned up, played football and deservedly turned us over. Even on
a good day, with a decent effort, they'd have been decent opposition - today,
with a half-hearted approach the result was in no doubt. Hopefully a wake-up
call. On
the brighter side the seconds march continues, Ian Roberts firing home a
hat-trick as the AFA Cup run continues with a 4-0 win away to Old Meadonians.
For the thirds, no skipper and no vice-skipper, so Hairy Jim at the helm. And an
inspiring half time team talk - "OK guys, we might be a bit disappointed to
only be 1-0 up, but" - at which point half the team interrupt "err,
skip, it's 0-0 actually". Once we'd convinced him a goal had been
disallowed for offside, he continued. Yet there was method in the madness (so
he'll claim) and in the second half Ben Goodier scored a hat-trick with Gio
Martelli adding a pair to run out comfy 5-0 winners. No
game for the fourths, and for the fifths another disappointing game. Old
Camdenians came to Shenley and deservedly left with the points. For the 6ths,
the revival continues, and a second consecutive league win, 3-1 away to
Southgate, with Spencer Gore notching a pair. So
to Sunday, and the opening game of the Veterans Cup campaign, at home to Hale
End Athletic. A good first half performance saw the Accies turn round 2-0 up,
Andy Edwards bagging the first, and then Ian Christopherson pulling off the save
of the season to maintain the margin. As the half ticked down Mike Bailey
unleashed a rocket from 25 yards which hit the bar and bounced out, but Andy
Edwards pounced to bag his second. The second half saw a holding operation, and
despite a succession of injuries the Accies held out for a 2-0 win. Saturday

Old Danes 3 Accies 1sts 3
(Brenton Amedee, Jon Houghton 2). Accies 2nds 4 (Innis
Pirrie 2, Ian Roberts 2) Egbertians 0
(Colm Gilmore). Accies 3rds 7 (Gio
Martelli 3, Scott Atkinson 2, Phil Stewart, Ben Goodier) Queen Mary
College Old Boys 2. Old Minchendenians 0
(Steve Woodrow) Accies 4ths 5 (Andy Williams 4, Matt Wanford). Accies
5ths 2 (Julian Courtney-Stubbs, Nick Sohnemann) London Hospital 2. Accies 6ths 2 (Spencer
Gore, Matt Glynn) Old Edmontonians 1. Chelsea
Old Players 3 Accies Veterans 5 (Yvon Nolle 2, Paul Samuel 2, Bob Woad). May
October never end. Five wins and two draws. A mixed day for the 1st XI. A game
which should have been sewn up by half time, but wasn't, saw the Accies trailing
by two goals with twenty minutes to go, and nabbing the equaliser in the final
minute. Yet a point away to a physical side on a poor pitch is probably a point
gained rather than two lost. For
the 2nds, a similar early tale - profligate finishing, but eventually the breach
was made and the sea poured in. 0-0 for a long time against Egbertians, but a
good 4-0 win by the end. The 3rd XI had a comfortable win over Queen Mary
College in the AFA Cup, never really stepping off cruise control and conceding
two late goals when everyone had really stepped off the pedal. The
4th XI machine rolls on - last week's 6-1 victory followed by a 5-0 demolition
of Old Minchendenians. For the 5ths a hard earned draw at Shenley against London
Hospital, whilst the 6ths finally got their season off the ground with a 2-1 win
against Old Edmontonians. Finally, the first game of the season for the Veterans
also saw a new opposition, and a 5-3 win over Chelsea Old Players. Saturday 5th October Pegasus 0 (Mark Dawson) Accies 1sts 4 (Mike Foster 2, Neil Gillard 2). Accies 2nds 3 (Mike Bailey, Chris Dobson, Innis Pirrie) Mill Hill Village 1. Leyton County Old Boys 1 Accies 3rds 3 (Matt Couzens, Phil Stewart, Gio Martelli). Accies 4ths 6 (Paul Bernard 2, Saj Malik 2, Adam Mammon 2) Egbertians 1. Old Reigatian 1 Accies 5ths 3 (Nick Sohnemann 2, Mark Hanlon). Accies 6ths 1 (Graham Whitworth) Old Buckwellians 2. Another good day for the Accies. A comfotable cup win for the 1st XI in the London Old Boys' and an AFA Cup win for the 5th XI in deepest, darkest Reigate. The 2nd XI continued their strong start to the season with a solid win over Mill Hill Village, whilst the 3rd XI started their campaign with a similar scoreline. For the 4th XI, an early rematch against Egbertians, and this time a much more resounding victory. The only blank of the weekend came from the 6th XI, for whom slow starts to the season seem to be becoming a bad habit. |
