Accies 5ths 0 Old Parmiterians 1. 4ths Match Report from Si Randall Accies 4s were back to winning ways against Egbertian 4s on the north face of the Eiger in Walthamstow on 21st Feb. The result owed much to the return of Tom Lovell, whose calmness and eye for goal were just what was needed. After a long break due to frozen pitches and so forth, a warm day on the vast prairie-like field was hard work, and the fitter side would always be favourites. As usual Accies worked hard in midfield to produce chances for themselves, but nobody but Lovell seemed interested in finishing them off. Midway through the first half he latched onto a defensive error and tucked it home from close range with all the rest of the Accies front six screaming for it at the far post. With the Accies firmly on top, the home side were lucky to level terms with a speculative long-ranger, but the Accies regained their lead with a classic example of simple football reaping rewards. Matt played the ball into the channel for Si Randall; his square ball found its way to Lovell, who finished crisply. Matt has fit well into this side and is particularly useful when he drops behind the front man and provides the link with the midfield. The pendulum could have swung back in this game when Egbertian won a free-kick on the edge of the box, but fortune smiled on the visitors. The ball richocheted off the bar, onto the line and into the box where the oppo striker was about to nod it in. Quick-thinking skipper Chris Coates removed the threat by booting the player in the face; the player went to hospital and the ball went over the bar from the resultant indirect free-kick. The second half was characterised by everyone looking knackered, with few having the energy to cross the half-way line. When sufficient Accies had made it into the oppo box Matt Redman took a corner that was cleared to Mark Emmerson. His swift and accurate return ball was sent back into the box by the miniature maestro and Lovell applied the finish with his usual aplomb to earn the match ball. All in all it was a pleasing return to the colours. The back four coped extremely well with their weakness, the ball over the top to the nippy forward, and Dave Jones and Paul Campbell provided their usual protection in front. Danny McConnell showed the value of a goalkeeper who comes for the ball and dominates his box, and he gave those in front of him confidence. Even Sam Samra, forcibly retired from the game by public demand last season, managed to go an entire 10 minutes on the pitch without conceding a penalty.
