Match Report courtesy of Shaun Herbert

The MVs would not get a better opportunity to turn over the Accies Vets…

The AVs were obviously weakened without the presence of their talismanic general Paul B. (who enjoying some respite in a secret location somewhere) and had only turned up with 9 players and no recognised keeper! Obviously, someone did not perform their interim admin duties very well… Oh yeah, that would be me! Nevertheless, they pinched one of their rival’s sons, namely Josh Jnr (with the MVs approval), to don the infamous black n blue stripes in an attempt to even things up!

The Accies lined up 4-4-1 with Tseyi given the unenviable task of playing up front on his own. The tense and gruelling (10 .vs. 11) encounter (on a top class playing surface and in glorious sunshine) began with Accies playing like the team with the man advantage with Joffs (Jonathon H.) and Joao pulling the strings in the middle of the park. AVs played some wonderful attacking football in the 1st half hour with our flying wingers Scott and Josh Jnr (the ringer) giving the MVs the run-a-round. During this period Accies had 4-5 good attempts on goal.  Nevertheless, they did score two crucial goals during this early onslaught… A lovely passing move on the left ended with a great run from Joffs to just about get to the pass before the defender and slam the ball home. Following this, Josh Jnr displayed lighting reflexes and composure to clip a loose ball (under pressure) home after the MVs were frantically attempting to clear AVs relentless pressure.During this period Shaun H. (AVs stand-in keeper) had little to do at the opposite end.  However, MVs would not accept defeat easily and subsequently and made their man advantage count by getting the better of the AV back line and eventually pulled a goal back. Following this AVs luck got worse with Tseyi pulling a thigh muscle… Having no subs, Tseyi valiantly elected to replace Shaun in goal.  AVs misfortune galvanised the MVs and they equalised just before half-time!

The 2nd half started evenly with both teams having decent attempts and equal amount of possession… Following this period AVs quality shone with two goals without reply… one from some good work on the right to get to the by-line and cut the ball back for Joffs to slot home and deservedly claim his 2nd goal for the afternoon… The other goal came via a neat move from a passing movement starting at the back via AVs midfield onto a another good run from Joffs… he cleverly drew the defender out and slotted Scott in for an attempt on goal… Scott was waiting for such an opportunity all afternoon and showed his quality by curling the ball into the far corner of the net. The match was in the bag until a dubious decision from the ref (who apart from this decision had a decent game) decided to awarded a penalty to the MVs for handball when the ball was driven at the mid-rift of an AV player!  Despite the AV players pleads the penalty was awarded and scored by MV making it 4-3.  AV then used all their know-how to slow the game down and kill the renaming time to clinch a memorable victory! MotM: There great performances all round from this gritty and determined AV team… undoubtedly, Joffs with his brace and all-round contribution to the game gets this honour.

However, a special mention must be made for the lastminute.com back four (of Paulo S, Paulo D, Mark E and Serge S) who were also exceptionally resilient especially in the periods when AVs were under pressure.
