Mandy Walker Memorial Games 2008 The Mandy Walker Memorial Games are held annually in memory of Mandy, UCL Sports Officer in 1985 who sadly passed away in 1987 the year after she left UCL. All proceeds go to the Meningitis Research Foundation. They offer the chance for past and present students to reunite at Shenley for a day's sporting events, followed by an evening disco and barbecue back at college in the evening. In 2008 the Mandy Walker Memorial Games will be held on Saturday 31st May, starting at 2pm at Shenley. Coaches will leave from the Bloomsbury Theatre at 12.30pm, and leave from Shenley at 6.00pm. There will be an evening disco, buffet and late (and cheap!) bar at the UCL Union, 25 Gordon Street. Following the success of the 5-a-side football tournament the last five years this will again be held this year. All will be welcome for the 5-a-side and we hope to have as many Accies sides as possible as well as a number of student sides, and sides from other Alumni. Tournament Format Ideally, the tournament will follow the usual pattern. 16 teams divided into four groups of four, with the top two teams progressing to the quarter finals of the main competition, and the lower two teams progressing to the quarter finals of a plate competition. Everyone is therefore guaranteed between four and six games. Each group is confined to one pitch, so you can expect to be playing half the time, and recovering the other half! If we have less than sixteen teams, then one or more groups may contain three teams (with longer matches) and if we have more than sixteen teams, then one or more groups may contain five teams (with shorter matches). Ladies and mixed teams are allowed, the key to the day is "the more the merrier". Tournament Rules The normal laws of Association Football apply, save for the following:- 1. Goalkeepers are not allowed out of the goal area (free kick), defenders are not allowed in the goal area (penalty if deliberate) and attackers are not allowed in the area (keeper's ball). 2. The ball is not allowed over head height (free kick). 3. Ball out of play, corners and goalie's ball are restarted with a roll in. The goalkeeper cannot kick the ball out of the area. 4. At the start of a half and after a goal, play is restarted with a kickoff from the centre circle. 5. A defender cannot deliberately play the ball back to the goalkeeper (free kick on the edge of the area). 6. All free kicks are indirect, defenders must be at least two yards from the ball. 7. Games in 5 team groups will be played over 3 minutes each way. Knockout games and 4 team groups 4 minutes each way. Times may be extended if we're running ahead of schedule. 8. A player sent off, or receiving two cautions during the tournament, shall take no further play in the tournament. 9. The top two teams in each group progress to the quarter finals, with the third and fourth placed teams progressing to a plate competition (also starting with quarter finals). 10. Substitutions can only be made when the ball is out of play, and must be with the referee's permission. Rolling substitutions are allowed. 11. If a knockout game is undecided, then the result will be decided by best of three penalties (then sudden death). No extra time shall be played.
